THIS WEEK IN AI 🤖

How about some AI music news?

Drake and The Weeknd just dropped a viral hit called "Heart On My Sleeve." Except that they didn’t. Rather, someone called @ghostwriter made an AI track using "software trained on the musicians' voices." It’s now being pulled from all the major streaming services after their publishers went into a tizzy.

So just how easy is it to make AI music? Well, this rap about a certain UX writing newsletter took about 2 minutes to make. Check out uberduck.ai to make your own.

Finally, Google’s AI music generator is like ChatGPT for audio, and OpenAI’s Jukebox is capable of creating super creepy "music." Check out the Sinatra-style Hot Tub Christmas for maximum weirdness.

Take a few seconds and try to make sense of this drop-down menu for sorting files.

Which is it: last opened, or newest first? Turns out, the "Newest to oldest" selection isn’t about how new or old the files are—it’s how recently they were opened.

The confusion is from the difference in meaning between "newest" and "most recent." A case of poor language leading to a confusing user experience.

THIS WEEK IN AI 🤖

Back in December, in our special AI edition, we talked a bit about deepfakes and synthetic media. A lot can happen in three months, namely, huge advancements in publicly available generative-AI art tools.

Midjourny released its version 5, allowing anyone to create realistic-looking images of, well, just about anything (including human hands, which had been a problem). So far, we’ve already seen images of Trump being arrested and the Pope lookin’ even snazzier than usual.

These images were created just for fun, yet they still fooled millions. So what will happen when bad actors start to use this technology for nefarious purposes? Will we be ready? (Spoiler alert: no!)

THIS WEEK IN AI 🤖

The new Bing is now available to all (no more waiting list). And, it turns out that it’s been using GPT-4 all along!

We compared Bing to ChatGPT two issues ago and saw that they generated similar outputs from the same prompt. That means we were inadvertently comparing GPT-4 to GPT-3. So, does that mean GPT-4 isn’t that big of a change from GPT-3? Yes and no.

As far as generating text, you likely won’t see a noticeable difference between the two models—especially if you know how to use temperature settings.

But besides having a larger parameter set, GPT-4 has some other nifty abilities, like being able to interpret and respond to images. Take a snapshot of your fridge, and it’ll give you recipes for what you can cook. It’s also better at passing exams and can handle longer prompts. This means we can input more contextual information, which can help generate better outputs.

So, where’s this all heading? 🤷

THIS WEEK IN AI 🤖

As the dust begins to settle on the big ChatGTP shake-up, we’re starting to gain perspective on the current state of AI writing tools.

Some think that ChatGPT won’t kill ‘writing’, but it WILL kill ‘content’ — and that’s a good thing.

And, is Prompt Engineering the job of the future, or just a passing fad?

Oh, right, and GPT-4 just dropped. 🤯

ChatGPT rival "the new Bing" has been going through some early growing pains. It recently added conversation styles with explanatory tooltips.

What’s interesting is how, after only a few days, Bing added "Let’s start over" to the beginning of each tooltip.

And, Bing resets the initial chat message every time you change the conversation style. These texts all include messaging about starting over, which raises the question: why such a big emphasis on a clean slate?

It's strange to be told to start over before you even start.

We’ve been trying out the new Bing. Let’s see how it compares to ChatGPT with a generic UX writing task (conversation style set to "more creative"):

Now, the same prompt with ChatGPT:

What’s nice is that they both gave the option to sign in instead. Were this a real scenario, a human writer could step in and craft the final version. But both tools were helpful in generating ideas.

Discord knows its target audience. Young, tech fluent, with gamer vibes. So it doesn’t shy away from injecting fun into the UI. E.g. this confirmation pop-up.

Other variants include: Bake a cake, Have an existential crisis, Record a new mixtape, and more. Obviously, this wouldn’t work for most brands. But Discord’s interface builds a rapport with its users that allows for it.
