Fossil Records, history assignment help –

fossil records

Fossils are always cited in support of evolution, but as Darwin admitted, “Geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely-graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps, is the most obvious and serious objection which can be urged against the theory. The explanation lies, as I believe, in the extreme imperfection of the geological record.” His good friend Huxley warned him that he had burdened his theory unnecessarily by insisting on the idea of slow, gradual change.

Consider the Chapter readings in The Origin. Why is the fossil record so imperfect? What kinds of evidence does Darwin cite? Do you think Darwin makes his case? Why or why not? What evidence has come to light since Darwin’s time that supports the idea that organisms have changed slowly and gradually? What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of relying on fossil evidence? In your discussion, include information on how difficult it actually is for remains to be fossilized. What conditions must be met for fossilization to occur? What traits are best studied this way? What information is not provided by fossils?

As the answers to all of these questions may not necessarily be in your assigned readings, you may need to “go digging” for information (on the WWW for example). Be sure to cite the sources of your information in your postings.
