In HIM practice, descriptive statistics are most often used in a HIM department. Terms such as mortality and morbidity are examples of descriptive statistics. Healthcare researchers, in contrast, are interested in understanding the characteristics of and reaching conclusions about a population from a sample, which is called inferential statistics.
